Is it unethical for an attorney to represent their own business?

hi, i am putting together a business plan and law school may be in the future of my real estate venture. a question that came up is upon my completion of law school would it be unethical for me to represent my family business which i have an interest in. states i intend on practicing in is Pennsylvania but i may have some dealings in the future in Virginia. the business may incorporate in Delaware in the future as well.

i would anticipate the majority of work in landlord tenant court but can forsee contract reviewing if needed.

I don’t see a conflict of interest. You are simply representing a client that happens to be family and which you have a vested interest in.

A conflict would arise if someone asked you to represent them in any kind of dealing with any of your family members.

A good rule of thumb: Disclosure.

As long as you disclose it, there should not be any conflict.

If there was an attorney in my family, I would definitely go to that person instead of someone I know nothing about.

Very similar to asking your doctor sister why you are having a specific symptom.

There is no conflict. But just in case, disclose it.
