Can a landlord report you to a credit agency if it doesn’t state he can on the lease?

On my lease, the only thing it states is that he (or an attorney) can enter and hold the premises if we don’t pay rent; it doesn’t say anything about reporting me to a credit agency. He’s calling now and threatening me by saying he’s going to report me and my roommates to a credit agency. Can he?

Anyone can report you to a collection ageny. He is within his rights to hire a collection agency.
Call one in your local city and they will help you with this question too.

  • CHUCK says:

Yes, ANYONE can report to a credit company that you owe them money. Even if you DON’T owe them any money.. Then you have to show proof you don’t.

  • Melius says:

He sure can. Pay your rent.

  • HotNurse71 says:

Yup, he sure can. Any business can report you for not paying a bill. Make sure and pay it or it might be difficult to rent another apartment with that on your credit record.

  • melfred_20 says:

Yes eventually it can get on your credit report cause he can send it to collectors.

  • laura468 says:

    most definitely he can

  • acermill says:

Of course he can report late payment and breach of contract to a credit bureau. He doesn’t need your permission to do that, nor do you need to be made aware that he will do so.

Credit reporting is a fact of the business world. If you do not want your credit file besmirched, then you must honor your financial obligations in a timely fashion.

  • TheMom says:

Of course he can, but only if you owe him money. He can not report late rent, just unpaid rent or property damage.

  • VOLLEYBALLY says:

Absolutely. You should have paid your rent.
